RESP Education Savings

Registered Education Savings Plan

Secure Your Child’s Post-Secondary Future with 20% in Guaranteed Grants.

A Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) is a tax-sheltered investment account purpose-built by the Canadian government to help families fund post-secondary education debt-free.

With tuition and living costs climbing across Canada, an RESP delivers an unmatched financial advantage: the federal government adds a 20% match on your annual contributions through the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG), up to $7,200 per child. Combined with tax-sheltered investment growth, an early start ensures your children graduate ready to build their careers without student debt holding them back.

Up to $7,200 in CESG Grants

The federal government automatically matches 20% on the first $2,500 contributed annually, depositing up to $500 of free money per child every year.

Tax-Sheltered Compounding

All investment earnings and government grants compound completely tax-free inside the RESP until your child begins their post-secondary studies.

Universal Program Flexibility

Eligible for Canadian and global universities, community colleges, vocational trade schools, CEGEPs, and recognized apprentice trade programs.

Zero-Tax Student Withdrawals

When withdrawn as Educational Assistance Payments (EAPs), funds are taxed in the student’s bracket, resulting in virtually zero taxes owed.

“An RESP is the only investment where the Canadian government gives you an instant 20% guaranteed return on your contributions. Starting early means your child can focus on their passions and career, rather than student debt.”

How much will the Canadian government contribute to my child's RESP?

Under the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG), the government contributes 20% on your first $2,500 contributed annually per beneficiary-delivering up to $500 per year in free money, up to a lifetime ceiling of $7,200 per child. Lower and middle-income families may also qualify for an additional 10% to 20% on the first $500 contributed, plus the Canada Learning Bond (CLB), which provides up to $2,000 in free grants without requiring any personal contribution.

What happens if my child decides not to attend college or university?

You have extensive flexibility. First, RESP accounts can remain open for up to 35 years, giving your child plenty of time to pursue education later. Second, in a Family Plan, grants and earnings can be redirected to another sibling. Third, your original personal contributions can be withdrawn completely tax-free. Finally, up to $50,000 of accumulated investment income can be rolled over tax-deferred into your own RRSP, provided you have contribution room.

Can grandparents, aunts, or friends open or contribute to an RESP?

Yes. Any Canadian resident can open an Individual RESP for a child-including grandparents, aunts, uncles, or family friends-provided they have the child's Social Insurance Number (SIN). Grandparents can also open Family Plans for their grandchildren. If parents already have an account, relatives can coordinate contributions to ensure the family captures the full $500 annual CESG grant without exceeding the lifetime $50,000 contribution limit.

How are RESP withdrawals taxed when my child begins post-secondary school?

RESP withdrawals are divided into two parts: (1) Post-Secondary Educational Capital (PSE), which represents your original contributions and is returned 100% tax-free, and (2) Educational Assistance Payments (EAPs), which include government grants and accumulated investment growth. EAPs are taxed in the student's hands. Because most full-time students have low income and utilize tuition tax credits, they typically pay $0 in taxes on their withdrawals.

What post-secondary programs qualify for RESP EAP funding?

Qualifying institutions are broad: eligible programs include full-time and part-time studies at Canadian universities, community colleges, CEGEPs, technical trade institutes, career colleges, and recognized apprentice trade programs. In addition, many accredited international universities and degree programs abroad (in the USA, UK, India, and worldwide) qualify for full EAP funding upon proof of enrollment.
