TFSA & RRSP Wealth Planning

Tax-Advantaged Wealth Building

The Dual Engines of Canadian Tax-Free Growth & Retirement Security.

Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSA) and Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSP) are the most powerful tax-sheltered investment vehicles available to Canadians across every stage of life.

While an RRSP reduces your taxable income today and defers taxes until retirement, a TFSA allows your investment returns to grow and be withdrawn completely tax-free at any time. When strategically coordinated, these two accounts work together to lower your CRA tax bill, accelerate compound growth, and safeguard your future lifestyle without government benefit clawbacks.

Immediate Tax Deductions

RRSP contributions reduce your taxable income dollar-for-dollar, generating substantial tax refunds you can reinvest or use to pay down debt.

100% Tax-Free Compound Growth

All interest, dividends, and capital gains inside your TFSA compound tax-exempt and can be withdrawn anytime without owing a cent to the CRA.

Indefinite Carry-Forward Room

Never lose your contribution limits. Unused room in both your TFSA and RRSP carries forward indefinitely, allowing catch-up contributions anytime.

First Home & Benefit Shelter

Borrow up to $60,000 from your RRSP tax-free for a first home under the Home Buyers' Plan, while TFSA withdrawals never claw back OAS or GIS pensions.

“The true secret to Canadian wealth building isn’t chasing market trends-it’s structuring your TFSA and RRSP so the CRA works for you. A coordinated plan turns today's tax refund into tomorrow's tax-free financial independence.”

Should I contribute to my TFSA or my RRSP first?

As a rule of thumb, if you are in a higher marginal tax bracket (earning above ~$55,000–$60,000), prioritizing your RRSP delivers maximum immediate tax deductions and high CRA refunds. If you are in a lower tax bracket, early in your career, or anticipating medium-term withdrawals (for weddings, travel, or emergencies), your TFSA is ideal because withdrawals are 100% tax-free and do not permanently consume contribution room. During your consultation, we model your exact income to pinpoint the optimal split.

How do contribution limits and unused room carry-forwards work?

For both accounts, unused contribution room never expires; it carries forward indefinitely. For your RRSP, you accumulate room equal to 18% of your previous year’s earned income (up to the annual CRA ceiling, e.g., $31,560 for 2024 / $32,490 for 2025) plus unused carry-forward room. For your TFSA, every Canadian resident aged 18+ receives the annual dollar limit ($7,000 in recent years), and any amount withdrawn is re-added to your contribution room on January 1st of the following calendar year.

How can I use my RRSP to buy my first home in Canada (Home Buyers' Plan)?

Under the enhanced Canadian Home Buyers' Plan (HBP), eligible first-time homebuyers can withdraw up to $60,000 tax-free from their RRSP (or $120,000 for a couple) to fund a home down payment. The funds must have been in your RRSP for at least 90 days. Repayment occurs over a 15-year period starting the fifth year after withdrawal, allowing you to use pre-tax savings to enter the real estate market much faster.

Will TFSA or RRSP withdrawals affect my OAS or GIS government pensions?

This is one of the most critical differences in retirement planning: TFSA withdrawals are completely excluded from net taxable income. They will never trigger clawbacks on Old Age Security (OAS) or reduce the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS). In contrast, RRSP (or RRIF) withdrawals count as taxable income and can push you over the OAS recovery tax threshold. We structure retirement drawdown schedules to preserve 100% of your government entitlements.

What happens to my RRSP and TFSA when I reach retirement age (age 71)?

By December 31st of the year you turn 71, Canadian law requires you to close your RRSP by converting it into a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) or purchasing a life annuity. You must then take mandatory minimum annual taxable withdrawals. In contrast, your TFSA has no age limit. You can hold your TFSA for life, continue making annual contributions at age 75, 85, or beyond, and withdraw funds entirely tax-free whenever you choose.
